Week 5 - Thursday

I missed class again today, unfortunately I am still very sick but I am going to try my best to get this assignment done on time.

Now that I have refined my topic to the pay gap I want to work on some more refined illustrations involving money and literal inequality.

I started with the idea of scales and one side being weighed down due to the fact that males earn more. Originally, I was thinking of doing empty scales perhaps with the gender symbol on each side but I decided adding coins would make it more obviously about the pay gap and more interesting to look at.




I tried a few different style options but again just ended up preferring the simple line drawing as opposed to anything fancy.

After this I began to play with some typography, I don't want to spam the blog with pictures of the same posters with different fonts but here are a few examples!

Rationale: For this assignment I wanted to bring awareness and shed light on Gender Inequalities in New Zealand. I started with gender roles and bias but then decided to narrow my topic down even more and went with the Gender Pay Gap, which in my opinion, is a big issue in the equality of NZ. The main audience I am targeting is young people - I went for that millennial style with thin lines and pastel colours, but I feel that my poster design could appeal to anyone of any age or demographic. The time period I have chosen is right now in the present - however I have been inspired by some art and posters from different decades! Week 2 - Monday

Unfortunately I missed the lecture this lesson but I asked a classmate what happened and managed to catch up reasonably easily! Today was a really fun class! We played 'pictionary' with our table groups and were given random words which we had to then draw and have our peers guess. It helped me to grasp that it is important not to overthink things! What first comes to mind might be the best and most simple idea. Follow your gut instinct.

Week 5 - Monday

Today was interim presentation and I was a little shocked as to the fact that the level of my posters was not up to par in comparison with everyone elses. I had some catching up to do. Here is one of the posters I used, and unfortunately I cannot find the other one but it is stuck in my workbook! My main critique from my classmates was that my posters were too busy and I agree with that - I want to try and make it more simple and relaxed with lots of negative space and simple typography. My peers didn't tell me this but looking back to my feedback from last time I should have focused on making my posters more obviously about New Zealand as well. I need to get on to that. After class I decided I needed to step up my game so I spent a while doing some work.
