Week 2 - Thursday

The lecture this morning was about different ways and different design styles you can use to get across the same topic or idea. Animal Farm was used as an example and we looked at all the different covers it has had over the years. Some of them really contrasted to each other, we looked at the Ihi and Wehi of each and the feelings and ideas they evoked. In class today we were given two random words and were instructed to create thumbnails using them in relation to our topic. I got given an eye and a weasel which I found challenging but very interesting! We also got given a saying to relate to our topic in thumbnail form. This helped me to step outside of the box a bit and actually think about different ways I could represent Gender Inequality besides the obvious. However, in terms of poster design I also think simple and 'obvious' ideas can be really effective.

Week 2 - Monday

Unfortunately I missed the lecture this lesson but I asked a classmate what happened and managed to catch up reasonably easily! Today was a really fun class! We played 'pictionary' with our table groups and were given random words which we had to then draw and have our peers guess. It helped me to grasp that it is important not to overthink things! What first comes to mind might be the best and most simple idea. Follow your gut instinct.

Week 1 - Thursday

This mornings lecture was mostly looking at other artists work along similar topic lines and different design approaches in regard to poster design and trying to get across a point. We related this to Ihi and Wehi and discussed how we could employ these techniques ourselves. In class we had a discussion about Equality and Issues in New Zealand and possible topic ideas we could use for our finals. We also did some more research on our topics and collected examples of Artist Models. We also did some more brain storming and I am thinking that I am leaning towards the idea of 'Gender Inequality' as it is something that I can relate to and have an interest/opinion on. Obviously this is still an umbrella topic and I need to refine it further but I am not sure which part of this topic I want to focus on yet.

Week 1 - Monday

During the first class back we had an introductory lecture where we learnt about what we would be doing for this assignment and the concepts and ideas that underpin it. We got taught about Iwi and Wehi and discussed the relevance of this to art and design - and poster making. We went back up to the class and then began to discuss different inequalities in New Zealand and which issues would be relevant to the brief. I am not too sure what topic I might pick yet, I am waiting to do a little more research first - I plan on starting out with a simple mind map of what I'm interested in and continuing on from there. In class we also looked at the Ihi and Wehi of a set of images and discussed them in our table groups then as a class. For homework we had to collect a few examples of posters and comment on their Ihi and Wehi. I also plan to start some more in depth research into inequalities and New Zealand and try and decide on a topic I might want to focus on.
