Week 1 - Thursday

This mornings lecture was mostly looking at other artists work along similar topic lines and different design approaches in regard to poster design and trying to get across a point. We related this to Ihi and Wehi and discussed how we could employ these techniques ourselves.

In class we had a discussion about Equality and Issues in New Zealand and possible topic ideas we could use for our finals. We also did some more research on our topics and collected examples of Artist Models. We also did some more brain storming and I am thinking that I am leaning towards the idea of 'Gender Inequality' as it is something that I can relate to and have an interest/opinion on. Obviously this is still an umbrella topic and I need to refine it further but I am not sure which part of this topic I want to focus on yet.

Week 2 - Monday

Unfortunately I missed the lecture this lesson but I asked a classmate what happened and managed to catch up reasonably easily! Today was a really fun class! We played 'pictionary' with our table groups and were given random words which we had to then draw and have our peers guess. It helped me to grasp that it is important not to overthink things! What first comes to mind might be the best and most simple idea. Follow your gut instinct.

Rationale: For this assignment I wanted to bring awareness and shed light on Gender Inequalities in New Zealand. I started with gender roles and bias but then decided to narrow my topic down even more and went with the Gender Pay Gap, which in my opinion, is a big issue in the equality of NZ. The main audience I am targeting is young people - I went for that millennial style with thin lines and pastel colours, but I feel that my poster design could appeal to anyone of any age or demographic. The time period I have chosen is right now in the present - however I have been inspired by some art and posters from different decades! After playing around with a few ideas, I went with the idea of the scale being weighed down on one side due to the fact that males often get paid more - and two hands holding out their pay - male and female. Week 5 - Monday

Today was interim presentation and I was a little shocked as to the fact that the level of my posters was not up to par in comparison with everyone elses. I had some catching up to do. Here is one of the posters I used, and unfortunately I cannot find the other one but it is stuck in my workbook! My main critique from my classmates was that my posters were too busy and I agree with that - I want to try and make it more simple and relaxed with lots of negative space and simple typography. My peers didn't tell me this but looking back to my feedback from last time I should have focused on making my posters more obviously about New Zealand as well. I need to get on to that. After class I decided I needed to step up my game so I spent a while doing some work. I had a little itch in the back of my mind that I still needed to try that 'Photographic Style' that I had been wanting to and had seen so many good examples of - so I did: I wanted to use the contrast of nuts
