Week 6

Rationale: For this assignment I wanted to bring awareness and shed light on Gender Inequalities in New Zealand. I started with gender roles and bias but then decided to narrow my topic down even more and went with the Gender Pay Gap, which in my opinion, is a big issue in the equality of NZ. The main audience I am targeting is young people - I went for that millennial style with thin lines and pastel colours, but I feel that my poster design could appeal to anyone of any age or demographic. The time period I have chosen is right now in the present - however I have been inspired by some art and posters from different decades! After playing around with a few ideas, I went with the idea of the scale being weighed down on one side due to the fact that males often get paid more - and two hands holding out their pay - male and female. Both of my posters employ a good use of asymmetric positioning to show the inequality between male and female, I also used colour to show this. In the end,

Week 5 - Thursday

I missed class again today, unfortunately I am still very sick but I am going to try my best to get this assignment done on time. Now that I have refined my topic to the pay gap I want to work on some more refined illustrations involving money and literal inequality. I started with the idea of scales and one side being weighed down due to the fact that males earn more. Originally, I was thinking of doing empty scales perhaps with the gender symbol on each side but I decided adding coins would make it more obviously about the pay gap and more interesting to look at. I tried a few different style options but again just ended up preferring the simple line drawing as opposed to anything fancy.  Following along the lines of money - Here are some other draft illustrations I came up with. After this I began to play with some typography, I don't want to spam the blog with pictures of the same posters with different fonts but here are a few exampl

Week 5 - Monday

Today was interim presentation and I was a little shocked as to the fact that the level of my posters was not up to par in comparison with everyone elses. I had some catching up to do. Here is one of the posters I used, and unfortunately I cannot find the other one but it is stuck in my workbook! My main critique from my classmates was that my posters were too busy and I agree with that - I want to try and make it more simple and relaxed with lots of negative space and simple typography. My peers didn't tell me this but looking back to my feedback from last time I should have focused on making my posters more obviously about New Zealand as well. I need to get on to that. After class I decided I needed to step up my game so I spent a while doing some work. I had a little itch in the back of my mind that I still needed to try that 'Photographic Style' that I had been wanting to and had seen so many good examples of - so I did: I wanted to use the contrast of nuts

Week 4

Unfortunately as I was ill I was unable to make it to either of the classes this week but I had continued to research my idea for homework as well as look at some other artist models in my own time. I also started to create an illustration employing lots of different little 'gender stereotypes' that we are exposed to on a daily basis in todays society. I am not 100% happy with the way that this looks but it is a start at least!  I also created an illustration based on the silhouette draft poster I had for the last interim presentation (unfortunately I can't find an image of the draft stage of this) but I was pretty happy with how this one looked.

Week 3 - Thursday

I showed my teacher the posters I made for last class and she said they were good (obviously need more developing) but her main critique was that you couldn't really tell the posters were supposed to be NZ based or about NZ- so I needed to make it more obviously 'New Zealand'. I also think I need to refine my topic a little more and put some facts on my next poster to add interest and some what of a 'punch line'. Unfortunately I had to leave this class early as I was feeling sick but Im glad I got to discuss with my tutor before I did. I plan to keep working on it at home and try to refine my ideas as well as my illustrations.

Week 3 - Monday

Unfortunately I missed this class but I know that it was the interim assessment so I will make sure to show my draft posters to my tutor next class! Here are the draft posters which I made for the interim assessment: The illustrations are not all my own however they definitely will be by the time of the hand in! I just wanted to use some things to give off the style and vibe that I was thinking of going for - I am either going to go for a simple and clean photographic style or perhaps a clean line drawing style.

Week 2 - Thursday

The lecture this morning was about different ways and different design styles you can use to get across the same topic or idea. Animal Farm was used as an example and we looked at all the different covers it has had over the years. Some of them really contrasted to each other, we looked at the Ihi and Wehi of each and the feelings and ideas they evoked. In class today we were given two random words and were instructed to create thumbnails using them in relation to our topic. I got given an eye and a weasel which I found challenging but very interesting! We also got given a saying to relate to our topic in thumbnail form. This helped me to step outside of the box a bit and actually think about different ways I could represent Gender Inequality besides the obvious. However, in terms of poster design I also think simple and 'obvious' ideas can be really effective.
